Koi Quarantine, Biosecurity & Health Testing

Koi health and biosecurity are central to the way Koi Enterprise receives, evaluates, and releases imported Japanese koi.
Imported koi experience significant stress during transport and transition into a new environment. Proper quarantine provides time for recovery, acclimation, observation, diagnostic evaluation, and careful management before koi are offered for sale or introduced into established collections.
Koi Enterprise has developed its quarantine and health-management program through three decades of hands-on experience with Nishikigoi, water quality, filtration, fish husbandry, and aquatic life-support systems. Our protocols continue to evolve as diagnostic resources, industry knowledge, and practical experience improve.

Our Quarantine Process

Take a closer look at the Koi Enterprise quarantine facility and the systems we use to receive, isolate, monitor, and care for newly imported Japanese koi.

Koi Enterprise maintains a minimum quarantine period of 30 days. Depending on the condition of the koi, health observations, diagnostic results, temperature response, and overall evaluation, quarantine may be extended for as long as 90 days.  The objective is not simply to hold koi for a predetermined number of days. Quarantine is an active evaluation process designed to give newly imported koi time to recover from transportation, acclimate to local water conditions, resume normal feeding and behavior, and be carefully monitored before release.  During quarantine, attention is given to behavior, feeding response, physical condition, water quality, temperature, and overall health.

Breeder-Specific Isolation

Koi Enterprise does not combine koi from different breeders within the same quarantine system.  Each quarantine tank is dedicated to koi from a single breeder and operates as an independent system with its own filtration, nets, heaters, and associated equipment.  Physical curtains and barriers are also used between quarantine systems to reduce the possibility of splash transfer and cross-contamination between tanks.  This separation allows each breeder group to be monitored independently and reduces unnecessary contact between koi originating from different facilities.  Dedicated equipment and independent filtration are important components of our Standard Operating Procedures and overall biosecurity program.

Temperature Management & Heat Cycling

Temperature management is an important part of the Koi Enterprise quarantine protocol.
During quarantine, water temperatures may be brought into appropriate permissive temperature ranges in which certain diseases, parasites, or viral conditions are more likely to become clinically apparent or detectable.
Koi Enterprise also utilizes heat cycling as part of the evaluation process. Rather than maintaining fish at only one static temperature, controlled temperature changes may be used during quarantine when appropriate.
The purpose of this process is to improve the opportunity to identify potential health concerns that may not be apparent immediately following shipment or when koi are maintained outside temperature ranges favorable to the expression of certain pathogens.
Temperature manipulation is used together with direct observation, diagnostic testing, water-quality management, fish behavior, and physical examination. No single method is relied upon as a guarantee that every possible health condition will be detected.

Diagnostic Testing & UC Davis

Diagnostic testing is an important component of the Koi Enterprise health-management program.  Koi Enterprise utilizes UC Davis for diagnostic blood work and PCR-based viral testing, including testing associated with Koi Herpesvirus (KHV), Spring Viremia of Carp (SVC), and Carp Edema Virus (CEV).  Diagnostic testing provides additional information that can support quarantine and biosecurity decisions. Laboratory testing is used together with direct observation, water-quality management, fish behavior, physical condition, and professional experience rather than as a replacement for proper husbandry.

Biosecurity & Standard Operating Procedures

Koi Enterprise treats biosecurity as an ongoing process rather than a one-time procedure.  Our Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are continually reviewed and updated as diagnostic methods, koi-health knowledge, equipment, and practical experience evolve.  The goal is continuous improvement in the way imported koi are received, separated, quarantined, temperature-managed, tested, monitored, evaluated, and ultimately prepared for release.  Our biosecurity practices include breeder-specific isolation, independent filtration systems, dedicated nets and equipment, separate heaters, physical barriers between systems, water-quality monitoring, controlled temperature management, diagnostic testing, and continued observation throughout the quarantine period.  When an observation or diagnostic result indicates that additional evaluation is appropriate, the quarantine period can be extended rather than releasing koi simply because a minimum number of days has passed.

Why Our Quarantine Protocol Continues to Evolve

Koi health management continues to evolve as diagnostic methods, veterinary knowledge, disease research, equipment, and practical experience improve.  Koi Enterprise does not treat its quarantine protocol as a finished or static procedure. Our Standard Operating Procedures are reviewed and refined as new information becomes available and as we gain additional experience with imported koi, diagnostic testing, temperature management, biosecurity, and long-term husbandry.  The goal is continuous improvement. Every shipment, diagnostic result, and observation provides another opportunity to evaluate how our procedures can better protect the koi, our customers, and established collections.

Protecting the Koi After Release

Our responsibility does not end when a koi leaves quarantine.  Koi Enterprise helps customers understand proper acclimation, filtration, water quality, feeding, and long-term husbandry so that newly acquired koi have the best opportunity to remain healthy and develop successfully in their new environment.  Three decades of professional experience have reinforced one principle above all others: selecting a quality koi matters, but protecting the health, biosecurity, and long-term development of that koi matters just as much.
