Koi Judging & Industry Experience
Anthony Quintero’s involvement in the koi industry extends beyond buying, selling, and husbandry. Over three decades, his experience has also included koi judging, industry participation, education, and direct involvement with the Japanese and U.S. Nishikigoi communities.
Anthony has served as a judge at local and regional koi shows throughout the United States and has also accumulated judging experience at more than three major All Japan koi shows in Japan, including the All Japan Young Koi Show.
These experiences have provided firsthand exposure to both U.S. and Japanese judging standards and to the evaluation of body conformation, skin quality, color quality, pattern, balance, condition, and overall quality in Nishikigoi.
Anthony is also an active member of Shinkokai USA, the U.S. chapter of the All Japan Nishikigoi Promotion Association, and serves as the organization’s Web Administrator, contributing to the promotion and advancement of Nishikigoi in the United States.
How Judging Experience Influences Koi Selection
Judging experience provides a different perspective on koi selection. Rather than evaluating a koi only by pattern or immediate visual appeal, experienced judging requires consideration of the entire fish, including body conformation, skin quality, color quality, balance, condition, age, development, and the characteristics expected of the variety.
Exposure to koi shows in both the United States and Japan has provided Anthony with the opportunity to evaluate Nishikigoi across a wide range of quality levels, sizes, varieties, and developmental stages.
That experience also influences the way Koi Enterprise approaches koi buying in Japan. A koi that looks attractive today may develop very differently over time, which is why breeder history, bloodline, age, body structure, skin quality, and future potential are all considered when evaluating a fish.
The goal is not simply to select koi that look good at the moment of purchase, but to use experience and context to help customers make better long-term choices.
Shinkokai USA & Industry Involvement
Koi Enterprise remains actively involved in the broader Nishikigoi industry through participation in Shinkokai USA and koi-show activities throughout the United States and Japan.
Anthony serves as Web Administrator for Shinkokai USA, helping support the organization’s online presence, member information, koi-show results, industry news, and the promotion of Nishikigoi within the United States. Participation in industry organizations, koi shows, breeder visits, and judging opportunities provides continued exposure to changing standards, breeder developments, emerging varieties, and the traditions that continue to shape the koi industry.
For Koi Enterprise, industry involvement is not separate from the work we do with customers. The experience gained through judging, Japan travel, breeder relationships, and professional participation is brought back into the way we evaluate koi, design systems, educate customers, and support the hobby.
Community Involvement, Education & Giving Back
Koi Enterprise believes that participation in the koi industry also means contributing to education and the broader community.
One of our longest-standing community relationships is with Jan Ken Po Gakko, a Japanese American cultural and educational program dedicated to helping children learn about Japanese American heritage, history, traditions, language, and community. Over the years, Koi Enterprise has welcomed Jan Ken Po Gakko students for educational field trips that introduce children to koi, ponds, aquatic systems, fish husbandry, and the Japanese traditions surrounding Nishikigoi.
These field trips provide students with an opportunity to experience another aspect of Japanese culture through direct interaction with koi and aquatic environments. They also allow Koi Enterprise to share practical knowledge, encourage curiosity, and introduce younger generations to the cultural connection between Japan and Nishikigoi.
Our community involvement also extends beyond educational field trips. Koi Enterprise has participated in food drives, volunteer activities, and other community-support efforts as part of our commitment to giving back to the communities we serve.
Education, service, and community involvement remain an important part of the Koi Enterprise philosophy. We believe that a strong business should contribute not only through the products and services it provides, but through the knowledge, time, and support it gives back to others.
Continuing Education Through Japan & the Koi Industry
Learning in the koi industry does not stop after a certain number of years.
Anthony continues to travel to Japan, visit breeders, participate in koi-industry activities, observe changing judging standards, and remain involved with the people and organizations that shape Nishikigoi.
Continued exposure to Japanese breeders, koi shows, judging, quarantine practices, filtration systems, and new developments within the industry provides opportunities to refine the knowledge that Koi Enterprise brings back to its customers.
Three decades of experience provide a foundation, but continued learning is what allows that experience to remain relevant.
Experience in Service of the Koi
Judging, buying, husbandry, pond design, water quality, filtration, education, and community involvement are all connected by the same objective: helping koi keepers make better decisions and giving the koi the best opportunity to remain healthy and develop successfully.
For Koi Enterprise, professional experience is not measured only by years in business. It is measured by continued participation, continued learning, responsible husbandry, industry involvement, and the willingness to share that knowledge with customers and the next generation of koi keepers and koi dealers.
