Japan Koi Buying & Breeder Relationships
Koi Enterprise has built its Japanese koi program around firsthand experience, repeated travel to Japan, direct breeder visits, and careful koi selection.
Anthony Quintero’s professional involvement with Nishikigoi began in 1996 and later included two seasons working and learning in Japan under Kaztaka Suda. That experience helped establish a practical understanding of Japanese koi husbandry, breeder practices, koi development, bloodlines, and the traditions surrounding Nishikigoi.
Today, Koi Enterprise continues to travel to Japan to evaluate koi directly at breeder facilities and source Japanese koi for customers throughout the United States.
How We Select Koi in Japan
A Japan buying trip involves far more than choosing attractive koi. Each fish must be evaluated individually, while also considering the breeder, bloodline, age, development, health, and the environment in which the koi has been raised.
When evaluating koi, Koi Enterprise considers characteristics such as body conformation, skin quality, color quality, pattern, balance, overall condition, and future development potential. The goal is to select koi that make sense for the individual customer rather than simply purchasing fish based on appearance alone.
Breeder knowledge also matters. Different Japanese breeders have developed reputations for particular varieties, bloodlines, body characteristics, and approaches to koi development. Understanding those differences helps Koi Enterprise determine which breeders and koi may be appropriate for a customer’s pond, collection, budget, and long-term goals.
Japanese Breeders and Koi Farms
Over the years, Koi Enterprise has visited, purchased koi from, and developed working relationships with many respected Japanese breeders and koi farms. These experiences have provided firsthand exposure to different bloodlines, varieties, production methods, and approaches to koi development.
Breeders and farms we have worked with or visited include:
- Suda Fish Farm
- Momotaro Koi Farm
- Yagenji Koi Farm
- Yamasan / Yamazaki Koi Farm
- Marusei Koi Farm
- Maruhiro Koi Farm
- Isa Koi Farm
- Maruyama Koi Farm
- Dainichi Koi Farm
These represent only a portion of the breeders and farms Koi Enterprise has worked with or visited over the years. Japan’s koi industry includes many specialized breeders, each with their own strengths, bloodlines, and production philosophies.
Our goal is not to promote one breeder as being right for every customer. Instead, we use our experience to evaluate the koi, the breeder, the bloodline, and the customer’s goals together so that each purchase is approached with the proper context.
Submit a Koi Request
Koi Enterprise uses customer requests to help guide our Japan buying trips. If you are looking for a specific variety, breeder, size, sex, quality level, or budget range, let us know what you are searching for before or during our travel.
When possible, those requests are considered while we visit breeder facilities and evaluate available koi. A request does not guarantee that a particular koi will be available, but it gives us a much clearer understanding of what to look for on your behalf.
Whether you are searching for your first Japanese koi, adding to an established collection, or looking for a potential show koi, the more information you provide about your goals, pond, preferences, and budget, the better we can focus our search.
After the Koi Arrive in the United States
Selecting koi in Japan is only part of the process. Once imported koi arrive in the United States, proper quarantine, observation, water quality, and husbandry are essential before those koi are released for sale or introduced into established collections.
Koi Enterprise maintains a quarantine process designed to allow newly imported koi time to recover from transportation, acclimate to their new environment, and be carefully observed before release. During this period, attention is given to behavior, condition, water quality, and overall health.
Our responsibility does not end when a koi is selected or sold. We also help customers understand proper acclimation, filtration, water quality, feeding, and long-term husbandry so that the koi have the best opportunity to thrive after arriving at their new home.
Three decades of professional experience have reinforced one principle above all others: selecting a quality koi matters, but protecting the health and long-term development of that koi matters just as much.
